Irrigation systems are a great way to keep your garden lush and healthy, but like any system, they occasionally run into issues. As an irrigation specialist, I’ve come across a few common problems that homeowners in New Zealand face. In this blog, I’ll share one of the most frequent issues I see and how you can resolve it.

Problem: The System Has No Water

If your irrigation system isn’t delivering water, don’t panic—it’s often a simple fix. One of the most common causes is that the water feed to the system has been unknowingly turned off.

Here’s how you can check and resolve this issue:

  1. Locate the Water Feed Valve

    • Find where the irrigation system connects to your home’s mains water supply.

    • This is often behind an external hose tap, where you’ll see a valve connected to the pipe.

  2. Check the Valve Position

    • If the valve handle is not in line with the direction of the pipe, it means the valve is turned off.

    • Simply turn the handle 90 degrees so it aligns with the pipe to restore water flow.

  3. Inspect for Leaks

    • Before assuming everything is resolved, check the irrigation system for leaks, particularly around the valve box.

    • If the valve was turned off intentionally, there may be a reason, such as a leak that needs attention.

  4. When to Call a Professional

    • If you’re unsure why the valve was turned off or spot any leaks, it’s best to get an expert involved. We can inspect the system, identify the problem, and guide you through the key features of your setup so you’re prepared for future issues.
